Why Build the Capacity ?

Gujarat's industrial landscape is a key driver of the state's economic growth, with industries like petrochemicals, chemicals, and manufacturing playing a pivotal role. However, the transportation of dangerous goods within this dynamic ecosystem presents significant challenges and risks. Mishandling or accidents during the transportation of hazardous materials can have devastating consequences, including environmental pollution, public health hazards, and damage to infrastructure.

According to data from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, there were over 5,000 accidents involving hazardous materials in 2021 alone, resulting in over 1,000 deaths and thousands of injuries. The sensitivity and risk factors involved in transporting dangerous goods requires specific precautions including meticulous packaging and conditioning, specific handling and training and development for persons engaged in transportation of this category of goods. The Bureau of Indian Standards through Transport Services Sectional Committee, SSD 01, has formulated an indigenous Indian Standard, IS 18149:2023 ‘Transportation of Dangerous Goods — Guidelines’.

Given the critical importance of ensuring the safe transportation of dangerous goods, building capacity in this area is imperative. Capacity building initiatives provide industry professionals, regulatory authorities, and other stakeholders with the knowledge, skills, and resources necessary to effectively manage the risks associated with transporting hazardous materials. It underscores Gujarat's proactive approach to ensuring the safety and well-being of its citizens, as well as the protection of its natural environment.

The aim of the Capacity Building Program on Safe Transportation of Dangerous Goods is to enhance safety practices and minimize risks associated with the transportation of hazardous materials within Gujarat's industrial landscape.
